The XXII edition of the International Agricultural Fair (Fiagrop 2019) was inaugurated on Monday at the Rancho Boyeros fairground, with the concurrence of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Cuba, producers, exhibitors, researchers, businessmen and peasant leaders.

José Luis Jiménez, official of the Central Committee, leaders of the Livestock Group and the Agricultural Trade Union, as well as the Honorable Mr. Seif Ali, Vice President of the Republic of Tanzania, were present.

At the beginning of the activity, three paintings donated to the Fair by professors and students of the San Alejandro School were unveiled.

One of the objectives of this fair is to promote the development of cattle farming, the branch of agriculture most affected by the economic crisis, and which counts for its resuscitation with the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.

Achieving food sovereignty, productive linkages, municipal self-sufficiency, scientific research, increasing exports and import substitution and the revival of some productions, were highlighted by José Miguel Rodríguez de Armas, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, at the inauguration Fiagrop 2019.

With these objectives, Agriculture has elaborated its development strategy, which establishes as priorities to export, substitute imports, satisfy domestic demand, rational and sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the development of productive forces, which includes science, technology and innovation.

Programs for the increase of national productions are applied, among them those destined to animal feeding, due to the excessive volume of imports that demand; the recovery of cattle, the production of smaller livestock (source to guarantee no less than five kilograms of meat per inhabitant per month), the re-raising of chickens with foreign investment projects, as well as the modernization of production technologies. eggs with greater efficiency.

He stressed the importance of increased production of pork because it is a line of high national demand.

It is about looking for an increase in traditional export items such as tobacco, honey, citrus, coffee, cocoa and others, and generate and increase new funds that are added to this destination, such as charcoal and some others that are beginning to have acceptance in the international market.

He commented that the Agricultural Fair has its original sustenance as a celebration for farmers, and shows the diversification of Cuban agribusiness.

Rodríguez de Armas said that producers, agricultural cooperatives and companies from 14 provinces attend this event, and that 34 exhibitors, including 24 foreigners from 22 countries, will participate in the trade fair. The best species that are exploited in the country are exhibited, and cultural activities of great attractiveness are carried out, among them the final of the national rodeo and coleo championship.
